Those starting out with their own web sites tend to wonder how much disk space is just right. When you initially sign up with a web hosting account, you receive a certain amount of disk space, which holds all of your files, and data that make up your web site. They can be php files, images, video scripts, audio, etc. Normally, the higher the cost of the hosting plan, the more disk space you will receive.
For example: If you have a simple site, which is just a few basic pages of text, then you do not need much space. Usually you will be fine with just 1MB of space.
Keep in mind that email messages also take up space. Incoming messages are stored on your server until you download them. A large amount of spam can take up a lot of disk space. The best thing to do is to keep up with your mail regularly and clean it out as much as you possibly can.
There are consequences to exceeding you disk space. You may be charged for the extra space depending on the policies set by your hosting company. It is much cheaper and cost efficient to upgrade before exceeding your limit than have to pay the penalty charges.
You can always determine how much disk space you have left by logging into your hosting control panel. If there is no control panel, then your other option would be to download your entire web site onto your computer and check the website from there.
The average web page contains 3 small images and 2 screens worth of text. This can equal to about 20 KB. So if all of your pages are similar to this, then a 10MB disk space can give you about 500 pages. But most sites are usually only about 50 pages or less.
On the other hand, if you are using any multimedia on your site, then you will need a little more disk space than that. The average 3 minute MP3 can use about 2.5-3MB of disk space. A good rule to follow would be, if you plan on hosting a lot of multimedia content, then determine that total size of all of your files and double that amount.
